The industry in PNG needs the international monitoring and market support that can be gained through an international certification and eco-labeling program developed by the Marine Aquarium Council (MAC). The MAC Certification system connects all links in the market chain from resource to retail. For PNG, this means that a Marine Aquarium Fishery Management Area (FMA), through the development of a Management Area Plan (MAP), will be MAC Certified and managed by a local MAP Committee. All individual FMA participating fishers will be required to undergo training

and be able to pass a MAC skills test to obtain MAC Certified status. All PNG exporters will also need to be MAC Certified to be able to sell MAC Certified marine aquarium organisms (See www.aquariumcouncil.org for MAC Standards and Best Practice Guidance documents). |

The PNG National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has contracted EcoEZ to develop a set of MAC approved, ISO ready, operational Standards and Best Practice Guidance documents for the marine aquarium trade targeted to PNG conditions. These new PNG Standards and Best Practice documents are scheduled to be completed and operational in late 2009. The PNG Marine Aquarium Fishery Standards and Best Practice Guidance will also follow, where applicable, the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Organisation (OATA) Code of Conduct (See www.ornamentalfish.org ) and FAO Ecolabelling Guidelines (See www.fao.org/docrep/008/a0116t/a0116t00.htm ).
